In an interview with The Enquirer, following yesterday’s lecture in Cincinnati, Geena reveals that the hope of a CinC TV-movie still hasn’t faded:

Davis said “there is the slightest glimmer of hope” she could return to the Oval Office as President Mackenzie Allen. “There is some interest in doing a TV movie about ‘Commander in Chief,’ ” she said.

And if not, she’s not sure what’s next.

“I don’t think I can ever act again. Any part I’d take after the President of the United States would be a step down,” she joked.

– does this mean that the movie deal mentioned in the two other interviews indeed is a CinC movie..?

The FreshDames website for female celebrities has launched an online petition with the aim of bringing back Commander in Chief – please, go there, sign your name, and let your voice be heard!

This is their press release:
Louisville, KY (PRWEB) August 21, 2006 — FreshDames website for female celebrities has launched a sister site for the main purpose of rallying people to petition ABC to bring back Commander in Chief.

Delivering the most-watched Tuesday drama debut on any network in the last five years, Commander In Chief has remained a strong performer for ABC …the most-watched new TV show this season, ranking among the Top 20 television series overall (No. 16) … continuously generates strong tune-in for ABC during the 9 o’clock hour on Tuesday night.
Throughout the nation and in the far reaches of the world, television viewers were buzzing about the latest ABC drama hit show, Commander in Chief. For months leading up to the show’s debut, previews and teasers were being aired at all hours, literally daring viewers to try and stop from watching this ground-breaking show.

This wasn’t your run-of-the-mill hype for a new show either, with a lead cast of award-winning actresses and actors. Commander in Chief had all the makings for a great show with a gripping plot.

Nearly 90 years after women won the right to vote in the United States, now a women was about to become the leader of the free-world and lead the nation. And like any good show with a great cast led by a great leading actress (Geena Davis), there was a great actor (Donald Sutherland) to add conflict and even controversy.

From the opening moments, even the casual viewer was hooked. Davis’ character, U.S. Vice President Allen, is traveling abroad when she is informed the president has suffered a massive stroke, and she needs to return to Washington D.C. to assume the presidential role and authority. Before she can collect her thoughts, she is whisked away aboard Air Force One and begins to head for the nation’s capitol.

Though respected in her capacity as V.P. there is an obvious reluctance to follow her lead and orders, with an underlying questioning of her every decision. Yet she holds her own, displays courage and conviction, and earns the respect befitting of a Commander in Chief.

Commander in Chief almost immediately dominated the Tuesday night ratings. ABC bragged about the show’s historical success, “Delivering the most-watched Tuesday drama debut on any network in the last five years, Commander In Chief has remained a strong performer for ABC …the most-watched new TV show this season, ranking among the Top 20 television series overall (No. 16) … continuously generates strong tune-in for ABC during the 9 o’clock hour on Tuesday night.”

ABC got greedy, moved the show to Thursday to compete with CBS, and it failed. Through their own actions, ABC sabotaged the show. Rather than admit the errors, please loyal viewers, and move the show back to its original timeslot, ABC cancelled Commander in Chief. It should be noted that Commander in Chief was nominated for ten (10) Golden Globes and Geena Davis won for Best Actress in a Drama.

Internet users can cast a vote, sign the petition, and demand that ABC bring back Commander in Chief.

On the show, they did “the usual” talk: how does she cope with three kids that small, why is she glad she waited so long to become a mother, why does she believe CinC was cancelled – and then they congratulated her on the Emmy nomination. A new aspect, at least from previous talkshows, was when they asked her whether CinC was in fact a promotional campaign for senator Hilary Rodham Clinton. Watch it to see what her reply was!

Though ABC canceled Commander in Chief in May, there’s been talk of a TV movie to wrap up the series, but so far it remains just talk.

“Rod [Lurie, series creator] is working with Touchstone [the sister studio that produced the series for ABC], and I think they’re going to pitch us thoughts on a film,” said ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson. “We’ll make a decision based on that.”

Should a film happen, McPherson said the ultimate hope is that it would be successful and lead to a renewal for the series, which starred Geena Davis as the President of the United States. If not, at least the movie might give fans closure.

“The way everybody is talking about serialized drama, we thought it would be a good way to bring a conclusion to that series if it happens,” McPherson said.

ABC network president Stephen McPherson answered questions Tuesday at the TV Critic’s Association summer press tour, being held in Pasadena. When asked what he thought went wrong with Chief, McPherson said if he did it again, he would do it all differently.

“We would definitely do it over,” he said. “What we would do is bring it on later in the season and let [show creator] Rod [Lurie] prep for it longer than he had a chance to… He was the voice of that show. I think the week-to-week production of a series was a real education to him… if we had gotten out ahead of it, we would have been able to deliver a show week to week.”

Original story from the Gulf Daily News, 5 July 2006

The Commander in Chief series has reached Bahrain and the rest of the Middle Eastern Gulf, leading to the following interview with Geena

First female president

WHO knew when Thelma plunged off that cliff that she was heading for the White House? Even this Hollywood star said she didn’t! Oscar-winner Geena Davis, who has in the past played a number of memorable roles in films including the Accidental Tourist, Stuart Little, Cutthroat Island and of course who could forget Thelma and Louise, is now taking on a new role – this time as the first female president of the US.

Playing one of the most scrutinised roles on television as Mackenzie Allen in the show Commander in Chief is no easy task, says the star, who recently won the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance in a Television Series.

After all, many critics in the US are already calling the show a ‘propaganda piece’ to pave the way for Hillary Clinton to run for the White House in 2008.

“I am getting tired of hearing that the purpose of this show is to pave way for Mrs Clinton,” Geena told the GDN in an exclusive interview as the show is now being shown in Bahrain and the rest of the Gulf on Showtime Arabia.

“I can only think that she must be getting the same amount of questions about Commander in Chief.

“The show is in now way a propaganda piece. It’s intended as entertainment.

“I will say that seeing a woman in the Oval Office week after week might help get people more comfortable with the idea and I think that’s great.”

Geena said that she has not modelled her role on anyone in particular, not even after a personal meeting with President George W Bush.

“I always feel like I am my best resource,” she said.

“I’m finding the parts of me that suit the character and her development.”

She met President Bush during a benefit at the White House and asked him, “Have you heard? I’m becoming the first female president.” To which she says he answered, “I’ve heard. Good luck with that. Well, stick around (the White House) and get the feel of the place.”

And did she stick around the White House?

“I did and I got a whole tour!” she said.

“It was very instructive.”

Geena said that when she first got the script for Commander in Chief, she immediately thought that Mackenzie’s role was for her.

“Even when I just heard the idea and before I received the first script, I thought yeah I could be the first female president. I was like, yeah!

“But after this role, you know after being the president, I’m going to be asking myself ‘How am I going to top this?’.

“It’s going to be really hard.”

And would she ever support Hillary if she ran for election?

“I have to go,” said Geena, ending the interview.

Original story by Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith, 26 June, 2006

In the following article, Geena speaks about the planned Commander in Chief TV-film – which seems to actually be happening, once Lurie is finished with his current projects – and also the possibility that this film will lead to more episodes of the actual series.

Fans of Geena Davis’ “Commander in Chief” who’ve been tantalized by the suggestion that the series might live again as a telepic, hear this: According to Davis, the made-for-TV movie looks like a go. And not only that, she tells us, “We’re hopeful that it will maybe serve as the impetus to do more episodes.”

Davis reports the plans won’t move forward right away, however. Rod Lurie, creator of the ABC series, will be writing and directing the movie, she says, and “he is actually shooting a film right now, so ours won’t happen until some time in the fall.”

The first 10 episodes of the acclaimed show are getting released on DVD tomorrow (6/27), as “The Inaugural Edition.”

The drama was derailed by internal problems. Lurie reportedly had trouble keeping up with the weekly TV pace, Steven Bochco was brought in to take over running the show, Bochco left after he and the network allegedly had disagreements, and finally, ABC pulled the plug. Even so, its impact remains undeniable. Notes Davis, “Someone sent me a survey by the Kaplan Thaler Group. It says that of the 76 percent of Americans familiar with the show, 58 percent are more likely to take seriously the idea of a female President.”

Davis’ brushes with real-life politics include having recently been invited to introduce Michelle Bachelet at a Washington, D.C., event. Bachelet is Chile’s first woman president – and a fan of “Commander in Chief.” “She told me she most loved the episode when I danced with the Russian president,” Davis says, “because she loves to dance, and she’s afraid people won’t ask her to dance anymore now that she is president. She seems so capable and confident, and also so warm at the same time. I like to think that Mackenzie had those qualities.”
