Geena spoke at the Women’s Conference on Tuesday, October 27, pointing out how the lack of female characters in children’s movies and TV shows is deeply rooted in U.S. culture.

“Hollywood is literally run on the concept that women want to watch stories about men and men don’t want to watch stories on women,” she said. “Our hands are literally tied by the fact that men aren’t interested in women’s stories.”
Davis says change can start when women pay attention and share what they see with others.
“I feel strongly that you can’t rely on change happening in the natural course of things,” she said. “Unless people are very active pushing and noticing this phenomena, things won’t change.”
“There’s terrific energy when women gather together,” she added. “With so many women working so hard, we can cause dramatic change.”

Happy 53rd Anniversary, Geena! Also, happy 3rd Anniversary, geena-davis.net!
Although not much is happening on this site lately, the lack of decent fansites or even an official site has made me decide to keep it online. When time allows, I will also keep working on the fact sections – the filmography especially. Returning visitors may have noticed that the gallery is gone; this is partly due to vulnerabilities with the script. I am looking into ways of restoring it in some form or another. The forum has also gone into hiatus, I couldn’t justify the amount of time spent to keep out spammers compared to the small amount of genuine traffic on there. For now, the possibility to comment on blog / news posts will have to do! Please, keep sending me links and news if you come across any, and together we’ll keep geena-davis.net a resource for fans for yet another year. Thank you!
Geena has arrived downunder for the filming of “Accidents Happen”, and The Sydney Morning Herald reports:
Davis, who won an Oscar for her role in The Accidental Tourist and picked up the world’s most attractive hitchhiker (played by an unknown actor named Brad Pitt) in Thelma & Louise, is in Sydney filming Accidents Happen. It’s a directorial debut for Andrew Lancaster, whose short film In Search Of Mike won the Flickerfest best film prize in 2002. Anthony Anderson, best known for Somersault, is the producer.
Davis plays the potty-mouthed mother of an accident-prone teenage son. “I think it’s probably the most foul-mouthed mother we’ve seen on screen. I get paid to swear,” she said.
Yesterday, producer Sydney Pollack died from cancer at the age of 73. Pollack was the one giving Geena her first role on the big screen when signing her on for Tootsie, allegedly having spotted her in a Victoria’s Secret catalogue.
Geena Davis kept her audience laughing at the Smart Talk lecture series at the Des Moines Civic Center on Monday night.
She wore a navy blue suit and light blue shirt. One of the first laughs came when she quipped that one thing about portraying the first female president of the United States in the TV show “Commander-in-Chief” – for which she won a Golden Globe – was that she now had “a lifetime supply of snazzy business attire.”
In spite of her humor, the film and TV star was earnest about her message that media and society do not give equal status to women. Two turning points in her life opened her eyes about that, she said.

(Weird photo? Not really! Geena was imitating Lt. Uhura from “Star Trek” as she talked about acting roles women had while she was growing up.)
